Anna Bederke, who was born in Hamburg, discovered her passion for film at a young age and made her first short film at the age of 16. She later studied film directing at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HfbK), where she directed further short films whilst studying under Wim Wenders and Fatih Akin. Shortly after graduating, she moved in front of the camera: Fatih Akin cast her in Soul Kitchen. Variety praised her debut as “the real discovery”.

This was followed by collaborations with directors as Matthias Glasner, Marco Kreuzpaintner, Markus Goller, Sönke Wortmann and others.

In the Silver Bear-winning feature film Sterben, Anna Bederke is once again collaborating with Matthias Glasner. The Irish drama That They May Face the Rising Sun, in which Anna Bederke plays one of the leading roles, won Best Film at the Irish Film Awards and was nominated in a total of 11 categories there.
In 2026, Anna Bederke will also appear in the English drama Faraway Home by Terry Loane and in Fatih Akin’s Geister.
