Birgit Guðjónsdóttir is an Icelandic-German cinematographer based in Berlin and Vienna, with a career spanning fiction, documentary and international co-productions across Europe, Turkey and Iceland. A prominent advocate for gender equality in the profession, she founded the Cinematographinnen collective of female cinematographers in Germany in 2017, served as a BVK representative to IMAGO from 2008 to 2020, and was a Board Member of IMAGO, the European Federation of Cinematographers, from 2012 to 2016. In 2018 she received the Honorary Prize of the Deutscher Kamerapreis in recognition of her contribution to the field.
Her filmography includes Our Grand Despair (Seyfi Teoman, 2010), which won Best Director of Photography at the Istanbul Film Festival, the feature Schattenwelt (Connie Walther, 2008), and Zappelphilipp (Connie Walther, 2012), which received nominations from the Deutsche Filmakademie and Deutscher Kamerapreis. She has worked with directors including Connie Walther, Esther Gronenborn, Maria Solrun and Claudia Garde across numerous feature films for German public broadcasters.
Her more recent credits include Odd Fish (Snaevar Sölvason, 2023), Amongst the Birds (Mika Kaurismäki, 2023) and the ZDF mini-series Die andere Tochter (Christian Zübert, 2025), premiering at Filmfest München in 2026. She speaks English, German and Icelandic.
