Katharina Woll was born in Munich in 1984. After graduating from high school, she lived in Quito, Ecuador, where she assisted a German documentary filmmaker. She went on to study film and theatre in Erlangen, Munich and Buenos Aires before studying Directing at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb). Alongside her studies, she worked on numerous film and theatre productions, including projects with Claus Strigel, Armin Petras and René Pollesch. Her short films and documentaries screened at international festivals, and in 2014 she continued her studies at Columbia University in New York.
Katharina’s work is characterised by a precise and deeply character-driven approach, shaped by her background in both documentary filmmaking and theatre. Her debut feature Alle wollen geliebt werden premiered at the Munich Film Festival in 2022, where it received the Best Screenplay Award, before screening internationally, including at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
Since then, she has worked across film and television, directing the ARD Degeto feature Justizpalast as well as the acclaimed ORF series Biester. After directing the second half of Season 2, she went on to direct the entire third season, a rare continuity that reflects both the success of the series and the trust placed in her as a director. Katharina lives and works in Berlin.
