Berlin-based writer-director Florian Hoffmann spent several years living in Ghana, where he worked in international development cooperation. He later studied Sociology and Political Science in Switzerland and conducted a year of research on La Réunion, focusing on Creolism and cultural appropriation.
At the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB), he directed several documentary films, including Hotel of the Dictators, Arlette and I Don’t Care Doesn’t Count. His documentaries screened at international A-list festivals, received numerous awards, and were released theatrically in Germany and Switzerland.
His feature film debut, Whispers of War, won eight film awards, including the Audience Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. All of his films have been awarded the German Film and Media Evaluation Board’s highest distinction, “Highly Recommended” (besonders wertvoll).
Florian is currently developing the international feature film Yazz, nominated for the Tankred-Dorst-Drehbuchpreis and Sundance Lab. Since 2025, Florian Hoffmann has served as a juror for the International Emmy Awards.
In 2026, he is directing the ZDF/ARTE feature film Neue Heimat, starring Katja Riemann.
