Ella Rumpf was born in Paris in 1995 and grew up bilingually (German/French) in Zurich. She studied acting in London (Giles Foreman Centre for Acting).
After making her debuts in small productions from 2012 on, she was first really noticed with her role of Ali in the award-winning feature film Chrieg (EN: War) by Simon Jaquemet for which she was nominated for the Swiss Film Award. This was followed by leading roles in other films such as Tiger Girl by Jakob Lass, which premiered in Berlin in 2017 or Grave (EN: Raw) by Julia Ducournau – a worldwide festival and critic’s favourite that was launched in Cannes and was selected as Révelation (Discovery) for the César in 2018. 2019 she played in Sympathy for the Devil by Guillaume de Fontenay and received the EFP Shooting Stars Award 2020 at the Berlinale.
For international Television HBO, Ella worked on series such as Succession and Tokyo Vice (directed by Michael Mann, Hikari a.o.). Ella Rumpf also appeared in main roles in the Netflix series Freud and the feature film Soul of a beast by Lorenz Merz.
This was followed in 2023 by the title role in the French-Swiss feature film production Le théorême de Marguerite (EN: Marguerite’s Theorem). The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, and in early 2024 she received a Prix Lumière the César for Best upcoming Female Actor for her performance and won the Swiss Film Award as Best Actress. Since she’s been the lead in Des preuves d’amour (EN: Love Letters) that premiered in Cannes and played at the Zff, starred in Coutures next to Angelina Jolie by Alice Winocour, reappeared as Stephane in Sarah Arnolds first daring feature L’espece Explosive (EN: Too many Beasts) that premiered at La Quinzaine in Cannes in 2026 and in Jupiter at the Venice Film festival 2026.
