Yoshi Heimrath, born in Munich in 1983, is a Berlin-based cinematographer known for his visually bold work across arthouse cinema and prestige television. He studied cinematography at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, where he received the Deutscher Kamerapreis in 2008 for the short film Illusion. His graduation film, Burhan Qurbani’s Shahada (2010), premiered in the Competition of the Berlin International Film Festival and earned Yoshi the First Steps Award for Cinematography, marking the beginning of a long-standing creative partnership with Qurbani.
Their subsequent collaboration We Are Young. We Are Strong. was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Deutscher Filmpreis in 2015 and opened the Rome International Film Festival. Yoshi later received the Deutscher Filmpreis for Best Cinematography for Berlin Alexanderplatz, Qurbani’s acclaimed adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s novel.
Alongside his feature film work, Yoshi has established himself as one of the leading cinematographers working between cinema and high-end television. His credits include Die beste aller Welten (Adrian Goiginger), Das Verschwinden (Hans-Christian Schmid), Netflix’s Blood Red Sky and How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast), as well as Eine Billion Dollar for Paramount+.
His collaboration with Adrian Goiginger on Der Fuchs earned him the Austrian Romy Award and a Deutscher Filmpreis nomination in 2024. Recent projects include Kein Tier so wild (Burhan Qurbani), Tochter der Erde (Lilli Tautfest) and the series Westend Girl (Pola Beck, Stefan Schaller). Yoshi speaks German and English.
